Will Croker will attempt to pick up his Bournemouth side for the visit of South West Premier’s bottom-but-one side Newton Abbot on Saturday at Chapel Gate (2pm).
The Lions suffered their first defeat of the 12-game season so far last Saturday when a Will Greenwood-coached Maidenhead inflicted a 28-16 road defeat on Croker’s men.
The Director Of Rugby pinpointed set-piece and composure as areas which gave their opponents momentum, but he says they have been trying to rectify them.
He said: “It is always difficult to get back on the horse after a loss as such at Maidenhead last week - and it is not something we have been familiar with this season so it is something we are hoping to bounce back from really quickly.
“We have had a really good weeks’ worth of training and the guys are very much focussed on getting back into playing the way we have been playing this year - as opposed to having to play in a style that does not suit us.
“We are aware there were mistakes made during the game last week, and fundamentally our composure and work at the set-piece let us down, and it is something which we have been working hard on to get that right.”
Unfortunately reliable lock Ben Roberts is out of action this week because of an AC joint injury meaning talismanic number eight Joe Rees switches to the engine room.
Prop Mike Davies also comes onto the bench with full-back Danny Kirkpatrick and Andy Spikings miss out.
But Croker is expecting a tough test from a side who he says bely their lowly league position in their last home game of the calendar year.
Croker added: “Newton Abbot are always a strong side and I am at a loss to understand why their league position is what it is, having received their team through for the programme this week.
“They look to be at full strength, and they have got a good pack led by Dean Avery who is a very good captain and a very strong player.
“They also have an exciting set of backs, so we are under no illusions that Newton Abbot are going to be a huge threat in what will be the last home match of the year.
“I hope everyone gets behind the side - because it has been an amazing year for us.
“It is one which as Director Of Rugby - and as the lead coach of the coaching team, if you like - we are very very grateful to everything which the home support have done.
“What the commercial team have done and most importantly the wonderful volunteers who come and make the match day experience what it is.
“They are an incredible bunch and it is now not just a rugby club focussed around 15 guys but now a rugby club with 1200 members.”
