Bournemouth skipper Joe Rees said ‘there was no way’ he was passing the ball prior to scoring his team’s third try.
The powerful number eight bulldozed his way across the Chapel Gate whitewash on the hour mark from five metres to move within one try of a bonus point.
That sent his team on their way to securing the all-important extra point needed for promotion, and Rees said he wanted to continue his good scoring run.
He said: “I don’t score many tries but I think I have scored more tries this season then I have in my last five years at the club.
“Ben (Roberts) was outside me absolutely screaming for the ball but there was absolutely no way I was going to pass it to him because I was within five yards of the line so I just backed myself and it was great to get on the scoresheet.”
Just nine minutes prior to the score from Rees, Exmouth pulled to within a few points after making it 13-10.
It turned out to be the closest the two sides would come to each other all afternoon.
The captain said it had taken a huge effort from the entire squad and but just the starting 15 players after Will Croker had rolled his replacements.
Rees added: “The boys are unbelievable from numbers one right through to 18 - everyone has been involved.
“There have probably been about 35 players who have been involved this year and they have all stepped up.
“It is a great squad and this promotion is a credit to the entire squad and not just to the first team, because it is the whole squad who have got this.”
