Bournemouth captain Joe Rees paid tribute to the guys in front of him for helping the number eight grab his side’s second score against Exeter University.
The Lions’ set-piece has been one of their most potent and trusted weapons in their rise to the top of South West Premier following an unbeaten start to the campaign.
With Joe Tarrant, Alan Manning and Gianluca Firetto packing down at the coal face, the number eight said he was given an “armchair ride.”
The back rower said: “It was an armchair ride for me at the back of this scrum to be honest.
“The scrum has probably not been up there for the last few seasons with the rest of our play.
“But this year the front row and the second row have really stepped it up and it was an armchair ride for me.”
Rees’ score came after just half an hour of play with his side already 8-3 up following the opening try by scrum-half Sam Hardcastle.
The experienced nine was on hand to dot down a scything break by inside centre Scott Chislett after 15 minutes before Rees then solidified their advantage.
But the number eight was quick to heap praise on his fellow members of the pack, and dedicated the score to the front five.
He added: “We can’t really call it my try to be honest because it was more the front row and second row - so all I had to do was dot it down really and that was it.
“They put me in the good positions and I all had to do was just flop on the ball really, so you could say I had the ‘technical job.”
