Ben Roberts said the Bournemouth performance in their 27-26 home win over Camborne on Saturday was not up to their usual high standard.
For the second South West Premier game running, the Lions found themselves behind at the break before eventually fighting back to triumph.
But the lock - who could also play blindside flanker if needed to - said they must improve in future.
Roberts said: “We were not happy with the performance in the changing rooms after the game, but the boys did a job at the end of the day.
“Camborne came out strong and everyone wants our scalp this year so as long as we keep putting in the performances, then we will be okay.
“The boys got the points at the end of the day today, but it was nothing special.
“I would not say the changing room was deflated afterwards, but obviously the lads expect a lot of ourselves, and today we did not quite reach the standard we expect of ourselves.”
One big positive to take from their two comeback wins is the successful functioning of lineout duo Roberts and Harry Leadbeater.
The complex positions of four and five tend to bring different demands with them.
The four tends to do more of the ‘dog work’ - being closer to the front row - whereas a five often showcases skills more attributed to the backrow - and Roberts is pleased with their progress.
He added: “We are absolutely dominating the lineout this season and Harry is obviously really good at the front and we are just developing each week and we are just getting better as we work together.
“I always prefer playing second row - always - and I have played second row for the last four years.
“I am a bit smaller then most second rows, but I prefer it because it suits my style of play better - I am like a little diesel engine - I just keep going and going.
“I don’t do anything special but I will just do a lot of the dog work.
“Martin Johnson is one of the greats so you can’t turn down looking up to him can you?
“Maybe one day I could emulate him, but I don’t think I am quite at that level yet.”
