BOURNEMOUTH warmed up for the new National Two South campaign with a dramatic late come-from-behind win over Midlands Premier outfit Bournville at Chapel Gate.
In their first run out since storming to South West Premier promotion last season, there was always going to be some rustiness.
Add in plenty of new faces, and it was never going to be flawless but there was lots to be encouraged by with two more run outs before the National Two South campaign gets underway.
With playmakers Grant Hancox and Mike Pope unavailable for selection plus wing Adam Higgins hobbling around the sidelines on crutches, there is plenty to come.
Playing against a side who finished fifth in the fifth level of English rugby and incorporating rolling replacements over three 30-minute periods, Bournemouth drew first blood.
The hosts were camped on the Midlanders’ whitewash after 12 minutes before the ball came out to their inside centre, who weaved his way through to score.
The score was improved before the visitors hit back on the half-hour mark when their openside flanker sliced his way through the defence.
He went in under the posts leaving the score to be easily improved to tie it up at 7-7 at the end of the first third.
With ten minutes gone in the second third, the Birmingham side then nudged a penalty into the corner before rumbling the catch-and-drive lineout over.
The Bournville stand off could not add to it leaving a 12-7 advantage, which was then added to moments later with two tries in a matter of minutes.
The away side raced down the right wing, before the ball was tossed back inside to a player in support who dotted down under the posts.
That left an easy kick for a 19-7 lead, but three minutes later Bournemouth fly-half George Drake took a quick-tap penalty before sending new signing Dylan Baptista over to score - leaving Drake an easy kick for 19-14.
The home side then switched off in defence which allowed the Bournville wing to go through a number of tackles and score after 49 minutes.
The simple conversion pushed their lead out to 26-14, but back came the home side again who cut their lead when speed merchant Wynn Roberts fired up the sideline.
The kick could not be added to leave it 26-19 in the favour of Bournville at the end of the second period.
Reliable Bournemouth inside centre Scott Chislett then cantered over to score when a big hole opened up for him in the Bournville defence on 67 minutes.
The kick could not be converted leaving Bournemouth trailing 26-24 for the final ten minutes.
But the best of the lot was then saved for last when speedy scrum-half Sammy Veneroso ran most of the length of the pitch to score the deciding try with the kick added.
